Brooklyn Botanic Garden is celebrating its Centennial in 2010. This summer a Garden-wide exhibition 100 Years, 100 Stories including a special selection of photos and memorabilia in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery display will showcase BBG’s history—important achievements and lesser known milestones, as well as personal stories from members, visitors, neighbors, volunteers, and staff.
The 100 Years, 100 Stories Opening Reception is scheduled for:
Sunday ~ June 13, 4 to 6 pm.
The exhibition will run:
Tuesday, June 8, 2010 – Sunday, September 5, 2010
With their goal of making the celebration personal, Brooklyn Botanic Garden solicited photo entries via a special Flickr group with accompanying stories of folks’ recollections: what they especially enjoy about the gardens, how they’ve spent time there.
Here are the images I shared on the BBG Flickr group:
JUNE 2005 ~ I was visiting my sister Victoria, who lives in Brooklyn, having traveled from California’s San Francisco Bay Area to see my East Coast family.
I’m a passionate gardener and LOVE to visit Brooklyn Botanical Garden whenever we can manage to get there. Victoria mentioned the recent peony garden installation containing plants imported from China, which we were both eager to see. So, she and I walked to the garden, cameras in tow, to enjoy and photograph the magnificent blooms.
When you only get to Brooklyn once a year, it’s difficult to experience the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in all its seasonal facets.
My sister and I, who have loved flowers since we were little, especially enjoy oohing and ahhing over them together. We walked to the gardens just in time to see the tulip show finale planted in long beds outside of the glasshouse, if I recall correctly. We enjoyed taking photos as artistic inspiration for our fine art pursuits….making the fleeting blooms and our memories last for years.
