Every November, a wonderful non-denominational church community, The Center For Spiritual Living, hosts an art show & sale to showcase the talent of their artistic members. It also functions as a fund-raiser for the ‘Center’ and supports good works charitable projects in our Santa Rosa area.

The first year Bill and I have participated, this year’s art show theme is Spirit Expressing tying into the current month’s topical theme of CREATIVITY. Facets of which are being explored in thought-provoking, practical Sunday sermons by their witty and brilliant minister, Dr. Edward Viljoen.

Selecting pieces for an art show is an exercise in creativity. Or a puzzle. The Harvest Fair theme & subject material was easy to adhere to, but ‘Spirit Expressing’ can be interpreted in MANY ways….from abstract compositions like Bill’s ‘Agate Passage’ to seemingly more ordinary images of nature’s beauty in its amazing diversity.

With helpful suggestions from Bill and our good friend, j. robert, I selected two favorite D’Gravure photo etchings from my early explorations:
~ ‘Cameo’ Flowering Quince
(this post’s intro image), a shrub growing in my Santa Rosa garden
and
~ ‘Dogwood Blossom,’ from a beautiful tree growing in Brooklyn’s famous Botanic Garden in New York City.

What I particularly like about ‘Cameo’ besides it’s luscious coral hue are the pretty little layered flowers that pop open in early spring along almost bare branches to glow cheerily in the morning sun.

‘Dogwood Blossom’ has a gesture of jubilant celebration. Or a prayerful joyousness. A deceptively simple, unadorned, almost monochromatic piece…folks love it!

My third entry ~ a new 2009 image framed for the Harvest Fair Art Show ~ ‘Sun Lion’ Yellow Peony, is a radiant image in golden yellows…and one of Bill’s favs! Am hoping it will exhibit well in the ‘Center’s’ more intimate venue.

‘Sun Lion’ Yellow Peony (photographed at Paeonia Nursery, Sebastopol CA) may be the famous ‘Garden Treasure’ ITOH intersectional hybrid, an early cross between tree & herbaceous peonies integrating the best features of both parents. Was frustrating wandering among those stunning blooms in April & May having NO idea which hybrids they were. Paeonia Nursery does have a map of the garden, but hadn’t printed them up for their garden visitors (sigh).

Part of the Art Show & Sale is the Center’s Silent Auction. Artists, craftspeople & congregation members may offer their art,  products & services for folks to bid on in support of the church.

It’s a nice way to make a charitable donation while increasing market exposure to potential clients or art patrons who appreciate what you do.

I selected six ‘Mini’ prints for the silent auction in a range of colors & compositions with starting bids of $10 (a 33% discount from my standard price of $15 ).

Curious, that just as we’re headed into winter, the images  I chose are primarily  springtime blossoms…. one of nature’s most jubilantly expressive seasons of the year!
